Bed Bug Epidemic Hits Kwai Chung Hospital: 10 Infested Beds and 4 Bitten Patients – A Growing Concern
Bed Bugs Infestation Hits Kwai Chung Hospital
Bed bugs reappeared in Kwai Chung Hospital in January this year. The hospital discovered on Monday that a male patient in the intensive care unit was suspected of being bitten by bed bugs. Bed bugs were later found on his bed. After inspection, bed bugs were also found in a closed heating tank and nine beds in the ward. Three more male patients were also suspected of being bitten by bed bugs.
Kwai Chung Hospital stated that it is extremely concerned about the incident and will carry out pest control and deep cleaning in the relevant wards. All affected mattresses and pillows will be disposed of after proper treatment. Bed bugs were found in 10 beds of Kwai Chung Hospital, and four patients were bitten.
Some family members of patients said that the hospital ward may look clean on the outside, but it is difficult to tell whether it is dirty on the inside. Someone may bring lice in, so as long as you wash your hands more frequently, you are not too worried.
A pest control expert said that it is not uncommon for bed bugs to appear in hospitals. Most are introduced by patients. They believe this is an isolated incident. They also pointed out that bed bugs have been found in 10 hospital beds. The bed bugs may have been present for several months.
Chan Wai-keung, vice president of the Hong Kong Pest Control Practitioners Association, said: “After breeding and expanding the colony, it is passed on. If the colony is only a few of its own, it will only stay on the original bed and suck blood. Review the cleaning methods to see if there are any omissions, especially if patients are admitted to the hospital. When doing so, check the patient’s body, his clothes, and his belongings.”
The hospital stated that it is extremely concerned about the incident and will carry out pest control and deep cleaning in the relevant wards. All affected mattresses and pillows will be disposed of after being properly disposed of.
