China’s military conducted joint exercises in the East China Sea on April 18, 2026, following a transit through the Taiwan Strait by vessels of Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF), according to statements from Beijing’s Defense Ministry.

The exercises, described by Chinese officials as a “routine arrangement organized in accordance with the annual plan,” aimed to test joint operations capabilities among participating units of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The drills took place in waters east of the Chinese mainland, near the maritime boundary with Japan’s administered territories.

The timing of the exercises coincided with the passage of MSDF ships through the Taiwan Strait, a move that Japan characterized as a routine navigation exercise in accordance with international law. Japan’s Ministry of Defense confirmed the transit occurred on April 17, 2026, involving two destroyers and a supply vessel conducting standard training operations while adhering to procedural notifications under existing maritime communication mechanisms.

China’s Defense Ministry spokesperson, Senior Colonel Wu Qian, stated during a regular briefing that the PLA activities were not directed at any specific country and were part of scheduled annual training. He emphasized that the exercises were defensive in nature and designed to enhance coordination between different branches of the military operating in maritime environments.

The East China Sea remains a area of strategic sensitivity due to overlapping maritime claims, particularly concerning the Senkaku Islands, known as Diaoyu in China, which are administered by Japan but claimed by Beijing. While the current drills did not occur in the immediate vicinity of the islands, analysts note that PLA exercises in the broader region often serve to demonstrate operational readiness in areas of territorial dispute.

Relations between China and Japan have experienced periodic tension over maritime activities, including incidents involving government vessels and aircraft near the disputed islands. Both countries maintain high-level diplomatic channels to manage such incidents, including the Maritime and Aerial Communication Mechanism established in 2018 to prevent unintended escalations.

Japan’s MSDF transit through the Taiwan Strait is not uncommon, with similar passages occurring several times per year. Japanese officials consistently describe these movements as exercises of navigational rights under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), emphasizing that they do not take sides in the cross-strait issue.

China, which views Taiwan as an inseparable part of its territory, routinely monitors foreign military transits through the strait and has previously issued statements expressing concern over such activities. However, in this instance, Beijing framed its response within the context of its own scheduled training rather than as a direct reaction to the MSDF movement.

As of the latest available information, no incidents or unsafe interactions were reported between Chinese and Japanese forces during the concurrent activities. Both militaries continue to operate under established protocols designed to reduce the risk of miscalculation in proximate maritime and aerial operations.
