After coaching in Romania and mentoring Nadia Comaneci, Karolyi defected to the U.S. in 1981 with his wife,Marta. they settled in Houston, Texas, where he became a fixture in U.S.olympic gymnastics, coaching numerous Hall of Fame gymnasts, including Mary Lou Retton and Kerri Strug.
