Table of Contents
Concern is growing over a loyalist bonfire in Belfast due to its close proximity to an electricity substation and two major hospitals. The location of the towering pyre has prompted warnings about potential power outages and risks to patient care.
Risks to Infrastructure and Public Health
NIE Networks, the electricity provider, has implemented mitigation measures at the substation to minimize the risk of damage. These include de-energizing transformers, erecting scaffolding with metal sheeting, and covering cable ducts with steel plates. Despite these precautions, NIE Networks warns of a reduced security of supply for the area and emphasizes the serious safety risks posed by flames near power lines and substations.
Belfast Health Trust is also working to mitigate any potential impact on patient care and treatment at nearby hospitals.Senior engineers will be stationed at Belfast City Hospital during the eleventh night, and discussions are ongoing with relevant agencies.
Stormont Opposition leader Matthew O’Toole has raised further concerns, highlighting the presence of asbestos on the bonfire site. He criticized the lack of public statements from responsible ministers, questioning why concerns about public health are not being addressed.
Bonfire Tradition and Past Controversies
The bonfire, located just off the Donegall Road, is one of an estimated 300 planned across Northern Ireland for july 10th and 11th. While most bonfires pass off without incident, they have historically been a source of controversy due to the burning of flags, effigies, and election posters.
The tradition is linked to loyal order parades held on July 12th, but past events have drawn criticism and raised concerns about public safety and respect. In recent years, some bonfires have reached notable heights, with the Craigyhill bonfire in Larne reportedly reaching 62 meters in 2022.
Ongoing monitoring and Mitigation Efforts
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and work with stakeholders to minimize risks. The Belfast Trust statement confirmed ongoing efforts to protect patient care and coordination with NIE Networks regarding potential power outages. NIE Networks reiterated its commitment to safety while acknowledging the potential for disruption to the power supply.
