Charles Leclerc secured a stunning pole position for the upcoming Grand Prix, capitalizing on a challenging qualifying session for championship rivals Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. The Monegasque driver put in a blistering lap to top the timesheets, while Verstappen struggled with car balance and Hamilton endured a shock early exit.
Leclerc’s Masterclass Amidst the Chaos
Leclerc expressed his satisfaction with his performance, feeling he had “maximised” the ferrari package.”It’s a great feeling to be on pole here,” Leclerc commented. “The car felt really good, and I think we managed to extract the most out of it. We’ve been working hard on improving, and it’s rewarding to see that pay off.”
Verstappen’s frustrating afternoon
Max Verstappen, who had been third fastest earlier in the session, found himself demoted to a lower grid slot after a costly error.A significant wheelspin out of the La Source hairpin hampered his entire lap, costing him valuable time through the iconic Eau Rouge and up to Les Combes.
“The lap was so bad,” a visibly frustrated Verstappen admitted. “We changed the car’s set-up with the expectation of rain on Sunday, but somehow the balance didn’t really improve, which is a bit weird. In Q3, the first set felt awful, and the second set, we tried something else, and it just didn’t give me any grip starting the lap. I had a lot of wheelspin right from the start, losing about 0.2 seconds immediately. Without that issue, we would have been much closer to the McLarens, but it hasn’t been a great qualifying.”
Hamilton’s Early Exit
For seven-time world champion lewis Hamilton, the qualifying session was a disaster. The Mercedes driver was eliminated in Q1, a result he deemed “not acceptable.” Despite the disappointment, Hamilton vowed to “have fun” in the race and fight his way through the field.”It hurts for sure,” Hamilton stated. “To go out in Q1 is not acceptable. We’ll look into what happened, but for now, I just need to focus on the race and try to make the best of it.”
Surprises and Setbacks in the Midfield
The qualifying session also threw up several surprises. Yuki Tsunoda put in a strong performance, aided by a new floor that Verstappen had been using in previous races. He will start ahead of the Racing Bulls teammates Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson, and Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto. Bortoleto, in particular, celebrated a career-first, making it into the top 10 for a grand Prix qualifying session, mirroring his achievement in sprint qualifying the previous day.
Aston martin’s Tough Day
In contrast, Aston Martin experienced a challenging qualifying session. Despite recent upgrades, Fernando alonso and Lance Stroll found themselves at the back of the grid. Alonso acknowledged the team’s struggles on this particular circuit. “It hurts for sure,” Alonso said. ”A little bit disappointed the weekend has not been the most competitive for us. It is something on this layout which is a little worse for our package.”
The grid for the Grand Prix is set, promising a potentially chaotic and unpredictable race, with Leclerc aiming to convert his pole position into victory, while Verstappen and Hamilton will be looking to carve their way through the field.
