Max Verstappen has publicly backed Red Bull’s decision to move in a ”different direction” following the departure of Christian Horner as team principal, emphasizing the need for the team to focus on performance and look forward. The reigning Formula 1 world champion, speaking after a period of intense meetings and speculation, expressed his commitment to the team’s future under new leadership.
A New Chapter for Red Bull Racing
Verstappen acknowledged the significant shift within the team, stating, “wanted to steer the ship in a different direction, probably. And then everyone else, of course, has to anyway agree to that and look forward.” He confirmed he has had ”quite a few meetings with Laurent” – referring to Laurent Mekies, who is widely expected to take on a senior role – and is “equally also excited for the team now moving forward because that’s what we have to do.”
The Dutch driver stressed the importance of leaving the past behind, adding,”Looking back,it doesn’t make sense. It’s not going to make you faster.” This sentiment underscores a collective desire within the team to channel energy into future success rather than dwelling on recent events.
Verstappen’s Reaction to Horner’s Exit
When questioned about his surprise at Horner’s departure after two decades at the helm, Verstappen responded, “Surprised. I meen, at the end of the day, in this world, things like that, they can happen.” He revealed that the decision was communicated thru a conversation, not a unilateral announcement. “You know, you have a conversation about it,” Verstappen explained. “I don’t need to go into detail what they said but it was, ’OK, if you guys think that this is the way forward, I’m the driver, you can decide, and this is how we’re going to do it’.” This indicates a collaborative, albeit potentially tough, discussion that led to the eventual outcome.
Factory Atmosphere and Performance Focus
Addressing reports of unrest at the Red Bull factory in Milton Keynes, Verstappen described the atmosphere as “good.” He admitted that “on the first day, people are a bit like, ‘OK, what’s happening?'” Though, he highlighted the team’s swift return to normalcy, noting, “But, luckily also, I think basically the day after the announcement, I was at the factory doing my simulator stuff.”
Verstappen reiterated the team’s primary objective: “You just go back to work. We have to work on performance, setting up the car here, making sure that everything is correlated in the best way possible.” This focus on technical progress and on-track performance remains paramount.
Addressing past tensions
Verstappen also touched upon the reported tensions between Christian Horner and his father, Jos Verstappen, over the past 18 months. These tensions were reportedly amplified by the allegations of sexual harassment and coercive, controlling behavior made against Horner by a female employee. While two internal Red Bull investigations dismissed these allegations, and Horner has consistently denied them, the situation has been a point of discussion.
“People can have a difference of opinion now and then, and I actually expect that to happen because if everyone always agrees there is a problem,” Verstappen commented. ”You need to have a difference of opinion. And, yeah, that’s now something that we work with in a different direction.” This suggests that while disagreements may have existed, the team is now united in moving forward under a new strategic vision.
