Belgian Teen Nearly Dies in Austrian Ski Accident

Teenager Dies in Skiing Accident in Austria

A 14-year-old boy has died after falling from a ski slope in Austria, marking the second fatal incident at a ski resort in the country in just two days. The tragedy occurred on Monday morning at the Feuerkogel resort, according to reports.

The boy, a Czech national, was skiing on a beginner’s slope when he unexpectedly veered off piste. He fell approximately seven meters through trees and scree, tragically impacting rocks and shattering his helmet.

A cable car employee discovered the teenager and immediately alerted authorities. First responders spent nearly an hour attempting to resuscitate him at the base of the slope before he was pronounced dead. “All available resources were called to the mountain,” Bernhard Magritzer, head of the Gmunden Alpine Police, told Kronen Zeitung.

Authorities are warning skiers to exercise extreme caution given the current conditions. Magritzer explained, “The problem is that there is currently no snow next to the slopes to cushion such a serious accident.” He further cautioned that the slopes are “extremely hard and allow for high speeds, which many then underestimate.”

The boy was skiing with a small group, including his father, in a relatively flat area when the accident occurred. The Feuerkogel resort, located 200 kilometers west of Vienna in Upper Austria, is known for its family-friendly slopes and offers a variety of year-round activities for skiers and hikers.

This incident comes amidst a broader pattern of skiing-related fatalities in Austria. A study published in 2020 tallied 369 deaths on Austrian slopes between the 2008/09 and 2017/18 winter seasons, although the number of deaths has been decreasing annually. Austria generally records less than one injury per 1,000 ski days, with a death rate of between 0.53 and 1.88 deaths per million ski days.

In a separate incident reported on January 29, 2026, a fatal crash occurred in Zell Am See, Austria, according to a post on the snowHeads ski forum. Details surrounding that incident were not immediately available.

Recent reports also highlight a separate incident involving a 16-year-old Belgian boy who narrowly avoided death during a skiing holiday in Austria. Details of that incident were reported by 7sur7.be, but further information was not available at the time of publication.
