BELIZE CITY, Belize — A domestic flight in Belize turned deadly Thursday when a passenger fatally shot a hijacker who had seized control of the aircraft. The incident occurred on a flight carrying 14 people.
The hijacker, identified as Akinyela Sawa Taylor, an American citizen, commandeered the plane with a knife, injuring two passengers. One victim suffered a critical stab wound to the back.
According to Police Commissioner Chester Williams, Taylor demanded the pilot fly him out of Belize.
The aircraft, reportedly low on fuel, flew erratically along the Belizean coast before safely landing at Philip Goldson International Airport.Taylor was pronounced dead at a local hospital following the landing.
Williams stated that a larger disaster was averted due to the plane’s dwindling fuel supply.
“we hoped we didn’t have to go from a search-and-rescue operation to a search-and-recovery operation,” Williams said.
Authorities had dispatched units to various airports, and a rescue helicopter shadowed the plane, unsure of its intended destination.
The motive behind the hijacking remains unclear. Williams noted that Taylor had previously been denied entry into Belize, raising questions about how he gained access to the country.
A U.S. Embassy spokesperson confirmed they are collaborating with Belizean authorities in the investigation.
