According to her family, Dame Maggie Smith passed away peacefully in hospital, surrounded by loved ones. “She was a very private person and spent time with family and friends until her end. She leaves behind two sons and five grandchildren,” her family stated. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful medical staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their wonderful care and kindness during her final days.”

Her portrayal of Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter film series (2001-2011) cemented her status as a beloved actress, and her role as Violet Crawley in the British drama “Downton Abbey” earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
