Ben Askren, the former UFC fighter and Bellator champion, has undergone a double lung transplant. The procedure occurred a week after he was placed on the transplant list due to severe pneumonia, his wife, Amy Askren, announced Monday.
Askren, 40, was hospitalized in wisconsin after contracting pneumonia following a staph infection. He was in critical condition and on a ventilator.
“We are so thankful to share that Ben has received a double lung transplant,” Amy Askren wrote in a social media post. She expressed deep gratitude to the donor and their family. “This is the begining of a new lifestyle for Ben, but every new day he has is a gift.”
She added, “Please keep Ben in your prayers that his body welcomes the new lungs as if they were his own.”
Askren, a father of three and former U.S.Olympic wrestler,won a Bellator Season 2 tournament and later captured the welterweight title in 2010.He defended the title four times and remained undefeated during his Bellator tenure.
He then joined ONE Championship, continuing his undefeated streak before the UFC acquired him in a trade for Demetrious Johnson. Askren’s UFC debut saw him defeat Robbie Lawler, but subsequent losses to Jorge Masvidal and Demian Maia led to his MMA retirement in 2019.
