Ben Shelton enjoyed a swift passage ‌into the second round of​ the Cincinnati Open on Sunday, but not in the ‍way he envisioned. His‌ opponent, ⁤camilo Ugo Carabelli, was forced to ‌retire early in ⁢the second ⁤set due to​ a knee injury.

Shelton Cruises initially, Faces Bautista Agut Next

Just three days after claiming his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title in Toronto, Shelton was looking agreeable against Ugo carabelli. He had secured‍ the first set 6-3 and led 3-1 in the second when‌ the Argentine’s injury brought the match to an abrupt halt after⁢ 64 minutes of play.

“It’s definitely not easy to play a couple of days after winning a title,” Shelton acknowledged. He expressed sympathy ⁢for his opponent, adding, “I feel for Camilo and⁢ it’s obviously not the way that you want ​to go through. I‌ hope that he has a swift recovery.”

Shelton clearly values the Cincinnati tournament, stating, “I’m just excited for the prospect to⁤ play here in Cincinnati. This is the tournament where I had a big breakthrough and ‍one that I never want to miss.”

The 22-year-old American will now face seasoned Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut in ​the next round. Bautista Agut​ brings a wealth of experience to the court, promising a challenging contest for Shelton.

Ugo Carabelli’s Unfortunate Exit

In other action at ⁣the Cincinnati‍ Open, Karen Khachanov, who recently fell ⁢to Shelton ​in a thrilling three-set tie-break in the Toronto final, secured ⁣his opening-round victory.He defeated ​French qualifier Valentin Royer 6-4, 7-6.
