Former England all-rounder Ben Stokes has signed with the Adelaide Strikers for the upcoming 2026-27 Big Bash League season, with reporting from 7News indicating his lucrative deal reaches approximately A$500,000 (£264,000 / $360,000 USD). According to announcements from the club on Tuesday, the 35-year-old is set to become one of the most expensive players in the history of Australia’s premier Twenty20 competition.
A Landmark Signing for the Adelaide Strikers
Stokes will be available for the full duration of BBL|16, which runs from December 2026 through January 2027. According to Cricinfo, his agreement marks the first overseas player signing since the competition confirmed its new direct-contracting structure, replacing the previous draft system to give clubs greater financial flexibility.
The financial terms reported by 7News place Stokes well above the previous platinum-level draft band of AU$420,000. Multiple BBL clubs pursued the marquee player, but the Strikers ultimately secured his signature for the one-year term.

Regarded widely as an elite match-winner, a pressure performer, and one of cricket’s premier all-rounders, Ben is someone our team is delighted to welcome as we eagerly anticipate his performances during BBL|16.
Fixture Schedule and Match Context
The Strikers are coached by former Australia Test captain Tim Paine, who led the side during the historic 2019 Ashes series. Stokes will make his debut for his new club on December 16 against the Sydney Thunder in Canberra, a fixture that will feature opposing star David Warner, according to Cricinfo. His first home appearance at Adelaide Oval is scheduled for December 23 in the return match against the Thunder.

I’m really excited to be joining the Adelaide Strikers for BBL|16. Adelaide Oval is an incredible place to play cricket, the Big Bash is a fantastic competition and the Strikers have an exciting group, so I’m looking forward to meeting the players, getting stuck in and contributing to a successful season.

Stokes retired from international cricket in June following a Test series against New Zealand and a subsequent 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia. His previous stint in the Big Bash consisted of a four-game appearance for the Melbourne Renegades during the 2014-15 season.
Broader Competition Landscape
The Adelaide Strikers enter the 2026-27 campaign seeking their first championship title since the 2017-18 season. The competition itself is dominated historically by the Perth Scorchers, who hold six titles.
The upcoming BBL schedule features less calendar overlap with other global T20 leagues than in previous years. The SA20 has pushed its start date back to January 18 to accommodate an England ODI series, while the UAE-based ILT20 concludes on December 20. The BBL season officially commences on December 12, with the regular season concluding on January 17 ahead of the finals series running from January 19 to January 26, according to Cricinfo.
