Bending Back to Fitness: Dominic Calvert-Lewin Hails Yoga Instructor as Secret to His Miraculous Recovery

Bending Back to Fitness: Dominic Calvert-Lewin Hails Yoga Instructor as Secret to His Miraculous Recovery

November 1, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

Dominic Calvert-Ruin talks about the key figures in his journey back to health in Burnstown. The Everton striker, who has missed significant playing time due to frequent injuries over the past few seasons, is determined to change his approach as he seeks to return to full fitness.

The 27-year-old credited the arrival of Sean Dyche almost two years ago as a turning point in overcoming these injuries. But the unsung hero who deserves praise is the club’s yoga instructor, Shela McVitie.

In a recent interview with the club’s media team, Calvert-Ruyn said: “I’ve known her for the past five years and she is amazing. Not only is she a yoga teacher, but she is also a friend who gives me the mental clarity I need. Every Thursday, my “A yoga session is essential to help me relax and prepare for the upcoming race,” he said.

Interestingly enough, while Calvert-Ruin was concentrating on his yoga class, reporters would flock to Burnstown for a pre-match press conference regarding Calvert-Ruin’s state of health. Dyche, on the other hand, was constantly asked about Calvert-Ruijn’s condition, but stressed that the striker’s recovery will require patience. Calvert-Ruin believes this approach has contributed greatly to his successful comeback.

He said: “When Daichi first came on board, he gave me the breathing room I needed and took some of the pressure off me that had been weighing me down before. I really appreciated it. It allowed me to focus on my recovery and not rush it. ‘I insisted on not returning to the game until I recovered,’ he recalled.

This season Calvert-Ruin has scored twice in the league, taking his total to seven goals in 32 games last season. He has a knack for scoring goals in succession, as evidenced by a last-minute penalty at Newcastle, a memorable winner against Burnley and his contribution to a thrilling Merseyside derby win at Goodison Park.

Calvert-Ruijn, whose contract is set to expire in the summer, has set his sights on surpassing Romelu Lukaku as Everton’s all-time top Premier League goalscorer. To achieve this he will need to find the net 13 more times, indicating his desire to remain at the club until at least beyond the January transfer window.

For him to achieve this goal, Calvert-Ruin recognizes the importance of combining new fitness with consistent form on the field. “My body feels fantastic and it’s a relief to know that the days gone by are now so far in the past. I’m in great shape now, strong and healthy,” he said.

“Being back in this physical condition means everything to me. There was a time in the past when I was desperate to regain my stamina, and it was a really difficult time. Because I wanted to help the team. That sense of urgency made me rush my recovery, which backfired. Football fascinates me, it is my obsession. During this difficult journey, I explored nutrition, yoga, meditation, and every other approach that could help me heal quickly. Now that I look back, I believe this could actually have been beneficial to me. It forced me to learn different aspects of health that will help me sustain my career.”
