San Sebastián Film Festival Set to host World Premiere of José Alayón’s Intimate Drama
The upcoming San Sebastián film Festival will mark the highly anticipated world premiere of José Alayón’s latest film, “Dance.” Described as a poignant exploration of family dynamics, the film promises to capture the “strange tenderness that sometiems holds families together,” according to festival programmer Renart.Renart further elaborated on Alayón’s directorial approach, stating, “José Alayón captures it all with quiet precision, in a way that is intimate and restrained yet resonates universally. His sensibility blends rare classicism with a singular way of seeing the world. We’re proud to present his vision to international audiences, beginning with the world premiere in San Sebastián.”
This distinctive vision extends beyond the narrative to encompass the film’s striking visual landscape. Shot on 16mm film,”Dance” immerses viewers in the unique environment of Fuerteventura. The island’s dramatic scenery, from its Mars-like arid mountains to the barren scrub desert where protagonists Miguel and mariana reside, forms a crucial element of the film’s sense of belonging. The cinematography also highlights the island’s ethereal light, beautifully captured in shots that transition from night darkness to dawn, illuminating house lights in a valley.
The film is being produced by Tenerife-based The Films trip, founded by alayón himself in 2004. The production company boasts an remarkable portfolio, including Lav Diaz’s upcoming Cannes Première title “Magellan,” Macu Machín’s double Malaga Fest winner “The Undergrowth,” and “Matadero,” co-written by Santiago Fillol.
Co-producing “dance” is Blond Indian Films,a Colombian company established by director and sound designer carlos Esteban García and Danish producer Katrin Pors. Blond Indian Films is known for its involvement in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight standout “Birds of Passage,” further underscoring their commitment to distinctive cinematic voices.
The world premiere of “Dance” at San Sebastián is poised to introduce audiences to Alayón’s masterful storytelling and his unique ability to weave together intimate human experiences with breathtaking natural beauty.
