Benfica have officially confirmed the contract extension of teenage left-back José Neto until 2031, securing one of their most promising academy products for the long term.
The 18-year-old defender, who has been part of the Benfica youth system since the 2017/18 season, put pen to paper on the new deal on Friday, April 24, 2026, shortly after turning 18 and becoming eligible to sign a long-term professional contract.
José Neto’s renewal mirrors that of fellow academy graduate Daniel Banjaqui, who also recently committed his future to the club until 2031, reinforcing Benfica’s strategy of retaining homegrown talent.
The announcement was made alongside Benfica President Rui Costa, with the club highlighting Neto’s determination to “conquer many titles in the club that I love” as stated during the signing ceremony.
Prior to the extension, Neto was under contract until 2027 with a release clause valued at 30 million euros. His performances across the 2025/26 campaign — which included 28 official matches for the under-19s, under-23s, B team, and first team — contributed to the decision to reward his progress with an improved long-term deal.
