Chase Brown is rapidly establishing himself as a focal point of the Cincinnati Bengals‘ offense, building on a strong finish to his rookie season and entering 2024 with increased confidence, improved skills, and a run scheme specifically tailored to his strengths. After a late-season surge in 2023, Brown is looking to solidify his position as a key contributor and potentially a league-leading running back.
From Backup to Breakout Candidate: Brown’s Rapid Ascent
Last year, Brown wasn’t expected to play a significant role. Initially behind Zack Moss, the Illinois product quickly demonstrated his potential, particularly as a receiving threat. He capitalized on every prospect, transforming into a dynamic weapon for the Bengals. Brown finished his rookie campaign with remarkable numbers: 1,350 total scrimmage yards, comprised of 990 rushing yards and 360 receiving yards.
his impact was particularly noticeable during Weeks 9 through 17, where he ranked fifth in the NFL in yards from scrimmage and third in total touches. An ankle injury sadly sidelined him for the season finale against Pittsburgh, cutting short a promising run. Though, the foundation for a significant role in 2024 was firmly laid.
Bengals Tailor Offense to Maximize Brown’s Strengths
This offseason, the Bengals coaching staff undertook a comprehensive evaluation of their run game, with a clear focus on maximizing Brown’s unique skillset. Running backs coach Justin Hill emphasized this player-centric approach: “At the end of the conversation, it wasn’t about what we think looks good on the board…(It was) what is Chase good at? How can we showcase his tools in the run game and in the pass game?”
The result is a redesigned run scheme built around Brown’s speed, balance, and versatility. He’s not just a one-dimensional back; he’s capable of excelling both between the tackles and on outside runs. This adaptability makes him a challenging matchup for opposing defenses.
Increased Confidence and Expanded Skillset
Brown himself acknowledges the significant strides he’s made. He reports feeling stronger and more confident as both a runner and a receiver. His receiving numbers demonstrate this growth, jumping from 14 receptions as a rookie to 54 last season.
“Sometimes, I think about the stretch I’ve had and the improvements that I’ve made,” Brown said. “I try to just stay in the moment…As much as I am thinking ahead sometimes, I’m really trying to just stay in the moment and focus on what plays I can make right now.” This focus on continuous betterment is a key indicator of his dedication and potential.
Impressive Pre-Season Performance Fuels Optimism
Brown’s strong training camp has carried over into the pre-season. In the Bengals’ opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, he showcased his abilities with five carries for 26 yards and three receptions for 25 yards during his two series with the first-team offense. While the Bengals ultimately lost the game 34-27, Brown’s performance provided a glimpse of what’s to come.
The team’s next pre-season test is Monday night against Washington, offering another opportunity for Brown to refine his skills and build momentum.
Defensive Perspective: A Arduous Matchup
opposing players are already recognizing Brown’s potential. Bengals safety Geno Stone, who faced Brown in 2023 while with the Baltimore Ravens, praised his running style.”With the speed and the way he’s able to use it coming out of the backfield, I don’t think he really gets credit for the way he actually runs the ball,” Stone said. “He’s a guy who can run the ball between the tackles or outside of the tackles. he has really good balance. When he hits the hole and gets through,he’s gone.”
This assessment highlights Brown’s well-rounded skillset and the challenges he presents to opposing defenses. His ability to consistently gain yards after contact and exploit running lanes makes him a perilous weapon in the Bengals’ offensive arsenal.
