Bengaluru: In a important move against online harassment,Bengaluru police have arrested two individuals for allegedly posting abusive content and issuing threats against actress and former Member of Parliament,Ramya. The arrests come after Ramya shared a news report on July 24 concerning the Supreme Court proceedings in the high-profile Renukaswamy murder case, in which Kannada actor Darshan is a prime accused.
Ramya’s Post Sparks Online Backlash
The online harassment campaign reportedly began following Ramya’s social media post, where she voiced her support for the victim’s family and called for justice. This act of solidarity, however, drew a vitriolic response from certain online elements, leading to a barrage of abusive comments and threats directed at the actress.
Police Identify and Apprehend Perpetrators
At a press conference held on Saturday, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda confirmed the arrests and revealed that further action is imminent. “Eleven more people have been identified for their direct involvement in posting abusive content online and will be arrested soon,” Commissioner Singh stated.
A joint examination conducted by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) and the police’s dedicated social media monitoring team meticulously verified 13 accounts linked to the threats. “CCB and cybercrime police are actively working on the case,” he added, underscoring the collaborative effort to tackle cybercrime.
The two individuals arrested are reportedly residents of neighbouring districts. When questioned about the potential connection to actor Darshan’s fan base, Commissioner Singh indicated that the investigation is ongoing and such details are still being ascertained.
