Benin Makes History: Elected Vice President of CoSPAL in Groundbreaking Move
Louis Gbèhounou Vlavonou Elected Vice President of the Conference of Speakers of African Parliaments
Louis Gbèhounou Vlavonou, President of the National Assembly of Benin, was elected Vice President of the Conference of Speakers of African Parliaments (CoSPAL) during the 2nd General Assembly held on October 26 and 27, 2024 in Accra, Ghana.
Louis Gbèhounou Vlavonou expressed his gratitude on his Facebook page, stating that “this election is testimony to the confidence in the National Assembly of Benin and underlines our commitment to strengthening parliamentary cooperation in Africa.”
The President of the National Assembly of Benin is honored to represent West Africa in this position.
The 2nd General Assembly of CoSPAL was held on October 26 and 27, 2024 in Accra, Ghana, where the Assembly noted the official establishment of the Conference of Speakers of African Parliaments and the adoption of its Founding Charter.
The Founding Charter defines the objectives of this new Parliamentary Organization, including the strengthening of consultation and coordination between the Presidents of African parliaments and legislative assemblies.
The representatives of the parliaments also elected the members of the Conference’s bodies, namely the General Assembly, the Executive Committee, and the Advisory Committees.
Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, speaker of Ghana’s parliament, has been elected president of the Conference of Speakers of African Parliaments.
CoSPAL was created in 2020 to facilitate discussions and cooperation between African parliaments.
