Benjamin Sesko is giving Manchester United a different tactical dimension following his return to the starting line-up, providing head coach Michael Carrick with crucial decisions ahead of Sunday’s Premier League derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Manchester United head into the weekend fixture after hosting Sabah FK in the Champions League, a match where the Azerbaijani champions served as what reports describe as likely the weakest of the eight league stage opponents United will face. Despite the nature of the European fixture, the encounter delivered valuable tactical insight for Carrick. United function as a significantly more effective unit when Sesko leads the line.
Physical Presence and Tactical Profile
Reports emphasize that the 23-year-old Slovenian striker offers a distinct physical profile that other members of the United squad lack. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches tall, Sesko forces opposing defences backward, provides a reliable target who is difficult to dispossess, and aggressively runs at defenders rather than away from them.
While Matheus Cunha has shown competence when deployed centrally, the Brazilian prefers to drift and drop deep into space, leaving a vacant gap at the apex of the attack. Sesko’s preference for playing on the last line stretches opposing backlines.
“He definitely offers a different kind of threat,” Carrick said. “That’s the beauty of it, really. We know what Ben gives us. There’s not many around that kind of give you what Ben does in terms of his physique, his physicality, playing on the last line and his speed to run in behind. He’s a real threat.”
Fitness Hurdles and Goalscoring Form
Sesko’s path to the starting XI has been complicated by a persistent shin issue. The Sabah fixture marked Sesko’s first start since a March match against Liverpool, after which he finally acknowledged he could no longer play through the injury.
Medical staff initially hoped the forward would recover in time for the opening of the Premier League season. Instead, his rehabilitation restricted him to second-half substitute appearances against Hull, Ipswich, and Everton.
Despite the interrupted recovery, Sesko’s output remains strong. He has now scored 12 goals in his last 21 appearances for Manchester United. His recent sequence includes a close-range header against Everton—which was ultimately overshadowed by Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ late strike—and a well-taken goal against Sabah FK after he ran behind the defence and rounded goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov.
“Of course, I’m happy with my goal,” Sesko told TNT after the European match. “I saw him rushing out, and it was a great opportunity to take the ball away from him and make the goal a little bit easier.”
Selection Dilemma for the Manchester Derby
Carrick faces a substantial personnel puzzle for Sunday’s derby against Manchester City. With Amad Diallo currently sidelined, Carrick must weigh whether to trust Sesko’s returning fitness for a high-intensity derby or to shift Cunha back into the central role.
If Sesko retains his starting berth, Carrick must then decide how to configure the left side of his attack. Marcus Rashford, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona, remains an unused substitute option with pace and direct running capability, though he has yet to record a goal or an assist since returning to his boyhood club. Cunha also remains an option on the flank after scoring the opening goal against Sabah.
With 90 minutes under his belt and scoring performances, Sesko has made a compelling case to spearhead the United attack when Manchester City visit Old Trafford.
