BenQ 27″ 5K Monitor: Affordable Apple Studio Display Alternative | March 2026

March 8, 2026 Lisa Park - Tech Editor Tech

BenQ has launched the MA270S, a 27-inch 5K display positioned as a more affordable alternative to Apple’s recently released Studio Display. Priced at $999, the MA270S undercuts the Studio Display’s $1599 price tag while offering comparable core specifications, including 5K resolution and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity.

The new monitor, announced on March 3, 2026, targets Mac users seeking a high-resolution display with accurate color reproduction. BenQ’s MA-series is specifically designed to work well with MacBook computers, prioritizing color accuracy in the pairing. The MA270S features a 5120×2880 Nano Gloss panel, matching the native pixel density of macOS for sharper text and images. This focus on macOS compatibility extends to features like iKeyboard Control, allowing users to adjust brightness and volume directly from their MacBook’s keyboard.

The MA270S boasts several key features aimed at professional users. It supports Thunderbolt 4 with 96W power delivery, enabling single-cable connection for both power and data transfer. Thunderbolt 4 output allows for daisy-chaining multiple displays. A Smart KVM feature allows control of two separate computer systems with a single keyboard and mouse. Picture-by-Picture (PbP) functionality enables simultaneous viewing of content from multiple devices.

In terms of display quality, the MA270S delivers 500 nits of brightness, covering 99% of the P3 color gamut and a 2000:1 contrast ratio. BenQ highlights the Nano Gloss panel as enhancing clarity, offering a viewing experience similar to Apple’s displays. While the color accuracy is high, it’s worth noting that the MA270S’s 500 nits of brightness is slightly lower than the 600 nits offered by the Apple Studio Display.

The launch of the MA270S comes shortly after Apple unveiled its new Studio Display. Several reports have positioned BenQ’s offering as a direct competitor, offering a compelling price-to-performance ratio. The Verge notes the MA270S is $600 cheaper than Apple’s entry-level Studio Display. AppleInsider similarly reports the monitor “gives the Studio Display a run for its money.”

However, the MA270S isn’t a direct one-to-one replacement for the Studio Display. Notably, BenQ’s monitor lacks a built-in webcam and its speakers – a pair of 3-watt units – are less powerful than the six-speaker sound system found in the Studio Display. The MA270S utilizes Thunderbolt 4, rather than the newer Thunderbolt 5 standard.

Connectivity options on the MA270S include two HDMI ports, multiple USB-A ports, and USB-C ports. These ports can be used to connect and charge multiple devices, even while the display is powered off. This feature adds to the monitor’s versatility, making it a potential hub for a Mac-based workstation.

The BenQ MA270S is available now through BenQ’s online store and retailers like Amazon. The monitor’s arrival provides Mac users with a significant new option in the high-resolution display market, offering a balance of features, performance, and price that may appeal to those seeking an alternative to Apple’s premium offerings. The availability of a 5K display for under $1000 represents a notable shift in the Mac monitor landscape, potentially increasing accessibility to high-end display technology for a wider range of users.
