Yelewata, Nigeria – A recent surge in violence has put the spotlight on the critical role of security forces in Nigeria’s Benue state.On June 14, a brutal attack on the Yelewata community left dozens dead, prompting calls for immediate action to protect vulnerable populations. The attack, allegedly carried out by armed assailants linked to herder communities, underscores the persistent tensions between nomadic herders and farming communities in the region. Anietie Ewang, a Nigeria researcher, emphasized the government’s failure to protect communities. Ewang stated the need for a swift and effective investigation into the attack, highlighting the importance of the security apparatus.
