Pittsfield Resource Center Receives Funding Boost for Homeless Support

A meaningful investment is coming to downtown Pittsfield as Berkshire Health Systems (BHS) pledges $300,000 over two years to support The First, a new daytime resource center and community hub slated to open this fall. This commitment to community health aims to address the growing need for safe spaces for individuals facing or at risk of homelessness. A portion of the funds will serve as matching funds,encouraging further local donations to the resource center.
Bolstering this effort, a private donor has contributed $60,000 to the matching pool.This means that the first $100,000 in donations from individuals and businesses will be matched dollar-for-dollar, effectively doubling the impact of each gift to the resource center.
The First,developed by Hearthway Inc. and operated by ServiceNet, with support from Cathedral of the beloved, Zion Lutheran Church, and the city, will operate seven days a week. Located on First Street, the center will provide essential services, including showers, laundry facilities, lockers, quiet rooms, technology access, and personalized case management. The trauma-informed “living room model” seeks to foster connection, reduce isolation, and empower guests to take positive steps forward.
Berkshire Health Systems views its support for The First as an extension of its mission to improve community well-being by addressing social determinants of health, such as housing stability and access to care. the resource center will serve as a crucial intersection for these priorities, offering resources and relationships to help individuals move forward.

What’s next
The First aims to raise $600,000 to fund its first two years of operation, ensuring a fully staffed launch and sustained momentum. With the city of Pittsfield covering rent and facility expenses through a $5 million investment, all community donations will directly support services, staffing, and guest assistance.
