Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Recording at the Philharmonie Chamber Music Hall

Members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, performing as the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin, have released a recording of Schubert’s Octet. According to reporting from Gramophone, the recording was produced in the Chamber Music Hall of the Philharmonie Berlin.

The Philharmonie Berlin

The Philharmonie Berlin has served as the musical center of Berlin since it opened in 1963. The building is recognized as a city landmark due to its distinctive yellow color and tent-like architectural shape.

The venue was designed by architect Hans Scharoun. The main concert hall was developed from a vision Scharoun wrote in 1920 regarding the ideal theatre space.

This design places the musicians and the concert platform at the central focal point of the space. While the architecture initially caused controversy, the design now serves as a model for concert halls globally.

The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra

The Berlin Philharmonic, known in German as the Berliner Philharmoniker, is a German symphony orchestra based in Berlin. Founded in 1882, the orchestra emerged from the Bilsesche Kapelle and gained prominence under the leadership of pianist-conductor Hans von Bülow.

Throughout the 20th century, the ensemble was led by several prominent conductors, including Wilhelm Furtwängler from 1922 to 1945 and 1952 to 1954, Herbert von Karajan from 1955 to 1989, and Claudio Abbado from 1989 to 2002. The orchestra is currently led by principal conductor Kirill Petrenko.

Historically, the orchestra focused heavily on Austro-Germanic repertoire, featuring composers such as Wagner, Strauss, Bruckner, Brahms, and Beethoven. In the latter half of the 20th century, the ensemble expanded its repertoire to include 20th-century works and compositions from outside the Austro-German tradition.

• April 15, 2026: The Varian Fry Quartet performing works by Mozart, Shostakovich, and Schoenberg in the Chamber Music Hall.
• April 19, 2026: The Vokalhelden annual concert, A Sea of Colours, at 11:00 in the Chamber Music Hall.
• April 19, 2026: A guest performance by the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra at 20:00 in the Chamber Music Hall.
• April 21, 2026: Artist in Residence performance featuring Janine Jansen, Sunwook Kim, and members of the Berliner Philharmoniker in the Chamber Music Hall.
• April 22, 2026: Sir Simon Rattle and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe performing Brahms’s Fourth Symphony in the Main Auditorium.
• April 30, 2026: A flamenco performance by Tomatito in the Chamber Music Hall.

The Berlin Philharmonic is scheduled to present the programme for its 2026/27 season on April 28, 2026.
