On April 21, 2026, the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin was awarded the Richard Hamilton Acquisition Prize at the IFPDA Print Fair in New York.
The prize, presented at the Park Avenue Armory, recognizes institutions for their contributions to printmaking, drawings, and editioned art. It includes a grant of $10,000 USD designated for the acquisition of works directly at the fair.
Previous recipients of the Richard Hamilton Acquisition Prize include the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the British Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.
The Kupferstichkabinett used the award to acquire two works: “Pregnant Caryatid” (2001), a color lithograph by Louise Bourgeois, and “Europa” (2005), a relief-like photogravure by Kiki Smith. Both artists are already represented in the museum’s collection.
The presentation was attended by Nora Lukács, curator of the Kupferstichkabinett, alongside representatives from IFPDA, including Jenny Gibbs (Director), David Tunick (President), and David Cleaton-Roberts (Co-President).
The IFPDA Print Fair is described as one of the most significant international platforms for printmaking, editions, and drawings, held annually in New York.
The award underscores the ongoing relevance of works on paper in museum collections and affirms the Kupferstichkabinett’s role in preserving and expanding the history of graphic art.
The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin issued a press release in both German and English confirming the award and detailing the acquisitions made possible by the prize.
