The Bern cantonal police have released unpixelated images of 31 individuals suspected of committing crimes during an unauthorized pro-Palestine demonstration in October 2025. This move follows a period of public appeals and the publication of pixelated images intended to identify perpetrators involved in unrest and property damage.

The demonstration, which took place on October 11, 2025, escalated into riots that resulted in injuries, significant police costs, and damage to approximately 50 buildings. Police estimate the property damage ranges from several hundred thousand to a few million Swiss francs, depending on the definition of costs used.

Investigation and Identification Process

Extensive investigations and the evaluation of video footage led the authorities to identify more than 100 people involved in the events. While many were identified, 32 individuals were clearly linked to crimes but remained unknown to the police.

In March 2026, the cantonal police launched a public appeal. On March 20, 2026, the police published pixelated undercover images of the suspects. At the time, authorities stated that if no identity leads were received within one week, the unpixelated photos would be released on March 30, 2026.

The Bern-Mittelland public prosecutor’s office ordered the publication of these images after the suspected individuals failed to come forward following the initial announcement of the manhunt. By the time the unpixelated images were released, police reported that only one individual had been clearly identified through the public appeal process.

In addition to the 31 “strong suspects” whose images were published, police have identified 101 masked suspects who are expected to be contacted in the coming weeks.

Legal and Privacy Implications

The decision to publish unpixelated images of suspects has sparked a debate regarding privacy laws and the use of technology in law enforcement. Reports indicate that the move has raised concerns about privacy-law risks and has triggered discussions regarding the use of artificial intelligence in identifying suspects.

Police officials noted that while public appeals are routine, a search involving such a large number of individuals is unprecedented. Under Swiss law, property owners affected by the unrest have the option to bring civil claims within the criminal proceedings or file separate lawsuits in civil court to seek direct payment for damages as part of a judgment.

The identification process based on the released photographs is expected to take several days.
