Crystal Palace secured a 2-2 draw against 10-man Besiktas in a Tupras Stadium Europa League clash, recovering from a half-time deficit before conceding a late equalizer. The fixture on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, saw Walter Benítez make his 50th European appearance, while Dwight McNeil started on the right ahead of both Ismaila Sarr and Darío Osorio, and Jean-Philippe Mateta returned to the starting eleven with Jørgen Strand Larsen dropping to the bench.
Mateta and Pino Spark Istanbul Comeback
Early chances continued to flow as Adam Wharton found Yeremi Pino, who controlled with his chest before returning the ball to Wharton on an overlap inside the box. Wilfried Ndidi was shown the game’s first yellow card in the 15th minute after hacking down Pino following some excellent pressing, and the subsequent free kick found Chris Richards, who headed just over the bar. Another opportunity arose when Tyrick Mitchell drove beyond the Besiktas backline from a great pass through but could not get his attempt on target. Wharton then got to the byline and sent a cross flashing across goal that just evaded Mateta, and from the resulting corner taken by Wharton, Mateta met the ball on the volley with a powerful strike that was saved well by Alexander Nübel in goal. Oh also got across his marker at a corner to glance his header just over. Just four minutes later, Mateta intercepted a loose backpass from Tiago Djaló and smashed a powerful finish into the roof of the net to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. The goal was Mateta’s first since the UEFA Conference League final.

Junior Olaitan Restores Parity for Besiktas
Besiktas responded in the 73rd minute when substitute Junior Olaitan drove a low, hard shot into the bottom corner following a cleared cross from Khalaily, leveling the score at 2-2. Despite late pressure and penalty appeals waved away by referee Danny Makkelie—including an appeal when Daichi Kamada was dragged down from behind by Djaló after being played in by Wharton, and an earlier penalty appeal for contact on McNeil from Salih Özcan—Palace failed to find a winner. Strand Larsen was forced off injured 25 minutes after coming on, holding his ankle in a non-contact situation aggravated by the red card challenge, with Eddie Nketiah replacing him and immediately driving his first effort into the side netting. Late in the match, Darío Osorio delivered an excellent cross, but Nketiah could not get ahead of the defender as the game ended level.

Pierre Sage Assesses the Performance at Tupras Stadium
Palace manager Pierre Sage assessed the performance after watching his side dominate large stretches of the fixture. The draw ended a run of two defeats for the Eagles and provided a significant step forward from their previous outing, improving upon a worse performance against Brighton on Sunday.
It’s really intense, it’s crazy to play here, but I would have preferred to say it’s crazy to win here. I am pleased with the performance but with the result a little bit frustrated for the lads.
