The ability to detect odors is critical for animals, influencing everything from hunting to mating. But pinpointing the species with the best sense of smell is challenging. Zoologist Matthias Laska, of Linköping University in Sweden, noted the difficulty in making broad statements, given the countless odor combinations and limited testing across species.
Olfactory research lags behind other sensory studies, partly because odors are challenging to control and measure. Though, scientists have identified clues by examining olfactory receptor genes. A 2014 study in Genome Research found that African elephants possess a remarkable 1,948 such genes, far exceeding humans (396), dogs (811), and rats (1,207). This keen sense of smell helps elephants locate food, recognise family, detect predators, and identify mates.

Another indicator is the olfactory bulb size, the brain region processing odors. Dogs have larger olfactory bulbs then humans. Among birds, turkey vultures excel, using their sense of smell to locate carcasses from afar. However, a Science review questioned the correlation between bulb size and olfactory capacity, noting consistent neuron numbers across species.
