Betrayal in the Empire State: Ex-New York Governor’s Aide Caught in Chinese Espionage Web
Former New York Governor’s Secretary Arrested on Chinese Spy Charges
According to the New York Times and other sources, Linda Sun, former deputy chief of staff to New York Governor Kathy Hokel, and her husband Chris Hu were arrested at their Long Island home on the 3rd local time.
Former Vice Minister Sun is accused of working for the Chinese government, including by interfering with attempts by Taiwanese government representatives to meet with U.S. officials and by attempting to arrange a visit to China by a senior New York state official.
In return, the Chinese government arranged multimillion-dollar deals for Sun’s businessman husband, allowing the couple to buy a $4.8 million home on affluent Long Island, a condo in Honolulu, Hawaii, and a brand-new Ferrari, U.S. investigators said.
It was also confirmed that a Chinese government chef delivered the ‘Nanjing-style salt duck’ dish to the home of former Vice Minister Sun’s parents and helped find a job for former Vice Minister Sun’s cousin.
The activities of former Vice Minister Sun and his wife were revealed as the U.S. Department of Justice recently launched an intensive investigation into Chinese government espionage activities in the United States.
When asked about this at a regular briefing on the 4th, Chinese Foreign Ministry deputy spokesperson Miao Ning denied any connection to China, saying, “We oppose malicious insults and slander against China.”
