Betrayal or Opportunity: Szczesny Speaks Out on Barcelona Transfer Rumors
Polish Wojciech Szczesny has commented on the reported news of him joining Barcelona.
Spanish press reports say that Szczesny is close to returning to the stadium soon via Barcelona after announcing his retirement after taking part in Euro 2024.
Szczesny, in a statement to Spanish newspaper Sport: “I have great respect for the history of Barcelona. It is one of the best clubs in the world.”
He added: “I understand the difficult situation the club is facing after Ter Stegen’s injury and it would be a disservice to Barcelona if I did not consider this opportunity.”
The Polish goalkeeper, who announced his retirement at the end of last season, will join Marc-Andre ter Stegen to compensate for his injury. (see details)
Spanish newspaper “Sport” published financial details of the deal, which is expected to be completed in the next few days.
The report explained that Barcelona would have to reach a financial agreement with Juventus to include Vocenk Szczesny, who retired a year before his contract with the Bianconeri expired.
Reports indicate that the Polish goalkeeper will speak to Juventus officials to approve his transfer.
Barcelona will pay the Polish goalkeeper 3 million euros, with a contract to be extended until the end of the season.
The report added that the Polish goalkeeper is currently in Marbella, Spain, where he is holidaying with his family.
However, Barcelona do not want to postpone his inclusion for next season.
Szczesny will compete with Inaki Pena and Ander Astralaga to reserve the starting spot for Barcelona’s goalkeeper.
Szczesny started his career in Poland with Agricola Warsaw, then Legia Warsaw, then Arsenal.
He was loaned from Arsenal to Brentford and then loaned to Roma.
Finally, he joined Juventus in 2017 and stayed with them until his retirement.
Szczesny played 252 matches with Juventus, keeping 103 clean sheets and scoring 233 goals.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper has won three Italian league, cup and two Italian Super Cup titles for Juventus.
He also played 84 matches with the Polish national team, during which he conceded 83 goals and kept 34 clean sheets.
Chesney justified his decision to retire by saying that he wanted to focus on his family life with his wife and children.
Ter Stegen has had successful surgery and is likely to be out for the rest of the season.
Barcelona lead the Spanish league table with 18 points ahead of Wednesday evening’s match against Getafe, who are 18th with 4 points.
