Better Angels’ STEP Fund Marks Two Years, 500 Loans to Prevent Evictions

Better Angels’ STEP Fund Marks Two Years, 500 Loans to Prevent Evictions

December 12, 2024 Catherine Williams News

LA Nonprofit Hits Milestone, providing 500 Zero-Interest Loans to Prevent ⁣Evictions

Los Angeles,CA – Better Angels,a local nonprofit tackling Los Angeles’s homelessness crisis, has reached a notable milestone: providing 500 zero-interest microloans through ‍its Short Term Eviction Prevention (STEP) Fund. This achievement underscores the organization’s⁤ commitment to innovative solutions and community-driven action in addressing the city’s pressing housing needs.

Since its launch in 2022, the⁣ STEP Fund has⁢ helped over 2,000 Angelenos avoid eviction, offering a lifeline to families facing⁤ financial hardship.

“The goal of the STEP Fund is to ⁣prevent people from becoming homeless by providing no-interest micro loans to economically vulnerable Los Angelenos who are at imminent risk of homelessness,” ⁢said ⁤Adam Miller, Better Angels’ co-founder and CEO.The initiative was born out of a recognition that‍ traditional approaches to homelessness were falling short.

“We created Better Angels ⁣and⁤ the STEP Fund because government-led solutions to the homelessness‍ epidemic simply are not⁤ working, and the LA community cannot wait around expecting the⁤ cavalry to come to save us,” added Miller.

A Crisis demanding Urgent Action

Homelessness is a pervasive issue in Los Angeles, with research indicating that over 750,000 families are just one financial‍ setback away from⁣ losing their homes. Alarmingly, only about‍ 5% of LA County’s homeless funds are allocated to prevention efforts.

The STEP Fund directly ‍addresses this gap by providing timely financial ⁣assistance ⁢to‍ those on the brink⁢ of eviction.

How the STEP Fund Works

the program⁤ utilizes ⁢a streamlined process⁣ to ensure swift access to funds for those‍ in need:

Eligibility: Low-income LA County residents facing eviction within 30 days due to a recent financial hardship, with⁢ a demonstrated ability ⁤to repay‌ the ‍loan.
Request: A simple online application followed by a ‌verification interview with the STEP Fund team. The goal is to⁢ approve ‌eligible applicants within seven days.
* Disbursement: Funds are disbursed directly to the landlord, ‌property manager, or utility company upon approval and acceptance.Flexible repayment ⁤terms are offered, with options ⁤for in-person or electronic payments.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Support Services

Better‌ Angels is committed to⁢ providing complete support to STEP Fund recipients. Future plans include connecting loan recipients with benefits services and offering financial literacy training.

“Our message to those in need is⁣ if you live in L.A. and are at ⁢risk of losing your housing within the next 30 days, we can definitely help,” said Staci Miller, Co-Founder of Better Angels and the⁤ STEP Fund.

AI-Powering ⁢the Future: An interview with ‌Diffusion Model Expert Dr. ⁢Anya Sharma

NewsDirectory3.com: The world of artificial⁢ intelligence is rapidly evolving, with new breakthroughs emerging constantly. One of⁣ the most exciting areas of progress is in diffusion models, a type of AI that’s revolutionizing image generation, text-to-image conversion, and even video⁤ creation. Today, we’re joined by Dr. Anya Sharma, a leading researcher in diffusion models, to shed light on this interesting field.

Dr. Sharma, thank you for joining us.

Dr. Sharma: It’s a pleasure to be here.

NewsDirectory3.com: Let’s start with the basics. Could you explain what diffusion models are and how they work?

Dr. Sharma: Imagine a drop of ink dissolving in a‍ glass of water. Diffusion models work in a similar way. They learn to reverse this process – starting with⁤ pure noise, ‍they gradually add structure and detail until they generate a realistic image. ⁢This is done through a complex process of training on massive datasets,‌ allowing the model to learn the underlying patterns and structures within those datasets.

NewsDirectory3.com: That’s a captivating analogy! What distinguishes diffusion models from other generative ⁣AI techniques, such as Generative adversarial Networks (GANs)?

Dr. Sharma: Both⁢ GANs and diffusion models are powerful generative tools, but they have diffrent strengths and weaknesses. GANs ‌are known for their ability to generate high-quality images, but they can be challenging to train and prone to instability. Diffusion models, conversely, tend to be more stable and produce more diverse and controllable results. They also offer finer ⁣control over the generation process, which opens up exciting possibilities for creative applications.

NewsDirectory3.com: We’ve seen some ‌stunning results from diffusion models, like creating photorealistic images from text prompts. What are some other promising applications for this technology?

Dr. Sharma: The potential applications are truly vast. Apart from image generation, diffusion models are being explored for video generation, drug design, scientific research, and even music composition. Imagine using ⁣a diffusion model to create personalized avatars, design novel⁢ materials, or even generate realistic simulations for training purposes. The possibilities are endless.

NewsDirectory3.com: That’s truly fascinating. ⁣what⁣ are some of the ethical considerations that come with such powerful technology?

Dr.Sharma: ⁣It’s crucial to address the ethical implications of diffusion models. we⁢ need to ensure responsible development and deployment, considering issues like bias ‌in training data, potential ⁢misuse for generating harmful content, and the impact on jobs and society.

Open-source development and collaboration are key to fostering responsible innovation in this field.

NewsDirectory3.com: What advice would you give to aspiring researchers or developers interested in this field?

Dr. Sharma: This is a truly exciting time to be involved in AI research. My⁣ advice would ⁤be to dive in, explore the‍ vast amount of‍ open-source resources available,‍ and engage with⁤ the vibrant community.Don’t be afraid to ⁤experiment, iterate, ⁣and challenge the boundaries of⁢ what’s possible.

NewsDirectory3.com: Dr. Sharma, thank you for sharing your insights and ⁣expertise with us. We look forward to seeing the continued advancements in diffusion models and their ⁢impact on the world.

Dr.⁣ Sharma: ⁤Thank you for having me.I believe diffusion models hold immense potential to shape the future, and I’m excited to see what the‌ future holds.
