Bettman, Gretzky Set Stage for Ovechkin’s Celebration
Ovechkin Inches Closer: Three Goals Away From Gretzky’s NHL Record
RALEIGH, N.C. — Alex Ovechkin continues his relentless pursuit of Wayne
Gretzky’s all-time NHL goal record. On Wednesday night, Ovechkin scored his
892nd career goal in the Washington Capitals’ 5-1 loss to the Carolina
hurricanes.
The Capitals’ captain is now just three goals shy of surpassing Gretzky’s
long-standing record of 894. With seven games remaining, the hockey world
anticipates the moment Ovechkin could potentially rewrite NHL history.
Anticipation Builds for Historic Goal
The anticipation surrounding Ovechkin’s chase is palpable. Wayne Gretzky
himself has expressed his intention to be present when Ovechkin breaks the
record. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also plans to attend.
Bettman noted that Ovechkin’s progress was hampered by injuries, suggesting
the record might have already fallen if not for those setbacks. “Alex really
did, but then he was injured,” Bettman said. “I have to start watching him
and The Great One will do that too. You can’t risk. When he gets close,
he’ll be so focused that she can do it with a multi -goal match.”
Potential Celebration Plans
The NHL is reportedly considering how to commemorate the historic moment.
Chris Johnston mentioned on a hockey podcast the possibility of a real-time
ceremony, potentially lasting around seven minutes, to mark the occasion.
Discussions are underway regarding the specifics of the celebration.
While Gary Bettman did not provide specific details, he indicated that the
league is preparing for a meaningful presence at upcoming Capitals games.Johnston added that approximately 15 league officials and Wayne Gretzky will
be present when Ovechkin is within four goals of the record.
It is expected that Ovechkin’s teammates will be allowed on the ice to
congratulate him after he scores his 895th goal.
Ovechkin’s Remaining Schedule
With seven games left, Ovechkin needs just three goals to break the record.
The hockey world watches closely as he continues his pursuit of Gretzky’s
mark.
