Salina Educator and World Traveler Betty Rassette Dies at 93
Betty Joan Rassette, a longtime Salina resident and educator who traveled to every state and several continents, died on February 12, 2026, at the age of 93. She passed away in Salina, Kansas.
Born on January 20, 1933, in Frankfort, Kansas, to Vester and Edith (Thomas) Leinweber, Betty dedicated over thirty years of her life to teaching, primarily at Salina Central High School. She held the position of department chair and specialized in Foods education, later expanding her expertise to include Science.
Beyond the classroom, Betty possessed a remarkable spirit of adventure. She visited all fifty United States and embarked on five cruises, with a Mediterranean voyage being her most cherished. However, her travels reached a pinnacle with a trip to Kenya, Africa, a journey she considered the highlight of her explorations.
Deeply rooted in her community, Betty was a dedicated member of Sunrise Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder and actively participated in various committees. Her commitment to service extended to numerous volunteer roles, including Meals on Wheels, the Morrison House and the Red Cross. She regularly prepared and served food on Fridays at Salina Grace, demonstrating her love for nurturing others.
Betty also found joy in creative pursuits, particularly quilting. As a member of Silver Needles, she crafted numerous beautiful quilts, many of which remain treasured heirlooms within her family.
She is survived by her son, Brian (Sue) Rassette of Leawood, Kansas, and her daughter, Diane (Randy) Shandy of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She leaves behind a legacy of love for four grandchildren – Joe (Molly) Rassette, Anna Rassette, Lisa (Adam) Augustine, and Amy (Bryan) Kelley – and six great-grandchildren, Logan, Aubree, Josie, Jude, Frankie, and Archie, with two more great-grandchildren expected to arrive soon. Family gatherings were particularly meaningful to her.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, and her brothers, Elliot and Vester Leinweber.
A memorial service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held on Saturday, March 7th, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. At Sunrise Presbyterian Church in Salina. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Heifer International, Salina Grace, or the CASTLE Program at Sunrise Presbyterian Church.
