Beware: Counterfeit £50 Notes Alert for Donegal Businesses This Christmas
Warning for Business Owners in Donegal: Fake Notes Alert
Business owners in Donegal should be cautious about counterfeit £50 notes this Christmas season. Recently, fake notes from the Bank of Scotland were reported in Buncrana on November 16th.
Gardaí have noted that those using fake notes employ tricks to exchange them for genuine cash. In one case, a man ordered food at a takeaway, paid with a counterfeit note, and left without taking his order and change. In another incident, a shopper tried to use a fake note at a store, but the staff identified it as false and he quickly left.
Local authorities recommend that business owners advise their employees to check all notes carefully. Garda Niall Maguire suggests using a counterfeit note checker pen or similar tools at the point of sale.
From January to October of this year, over 700 counterfeit incidents were reported nationwide, up from 130 during the same period last year.
To verify the authenticity of euro notes, cash handlers and the public should:
- Feel: The note should be made of cotton, feeling crisp and firm.
- Look: Hold the note up to the light to find the watermark and visible value.
- Tilt: Move the note to see the hologram, which displays the note’s value.
- Check: Confirm that the signature of the President of the European Central Bank is present.
Stay alert and ensure the safety of transactions during this busy shopping season.
