Warning: Fake Love Online Scam Targets Romanians

Cybersecurity experts have identified a new type of online fraud, dubbed “Fake Love,” which aims to extract information and money from unsuspecting victims.

Scammers typically find their victims on social media, dating websites, or through phone numbers and email addresses.

One common message sent by scammers reads: “Hello, sorry to bother you, I’m looking for an honest and reliable boyfriend for my sister. She is very kind and beautiful. If you are single, you can get to know each other to make friends. This is his WhatsApp.”

Behind these messages are individuals who quickly declare their affection and ask victims to communicate privately. They then send vague or misspelled messages, request personal clips or photos, and eventually ask for money, gifts, or bank details. In some cases, scammers may resort to blackmail to obtain the desired amounts.

According to DNSC, “Behind a social media profile or message can be an attacker who assumes a false identity. Always be wary of those who contact you and pay attention to how they try to interact with you. Don’t hesitate to ask probing questions.”

Protecting Yourself from Online Scammers

  • Be cautious when interacting with strangers online, especially those who quickly declare their affection.
  • Verify the identity of individuals who contact you through social media or dating websites.
  • Avoid sharing personal or financial information with unknown individuals.
  • Report suspicious activity to the relevant authorities and websites.

What to Do If You’ve Fallen Victim to a Scammer

  • Immediately stop contacting the scammer.
  • Keep records of ongoing conversations, if possible.
  • File a complaint with the police.
  • Report the offender to the website or platform where you were initially contacted.
  • If you’ve shared bank details, contact your bank immediately.
