Beyond the Scroll: Uncovering the Power of Deep Reading in a World of Fleeting Videos
Guangxi Normal University Press’s 3rd Book Review Competition and Cultural Salon Event
China News Service, September 11: A reporter learned from the organizer that the award ceremony of the “Deep Reading and Writing Another Possibility” Guangxi Normal University Press’s 3rd Book Review Competition and the “How Do We Read in the Short Video Era” cultural salon event were held recently.
The competition system and tracks were innovated this year, with a focus on landscape reading in the book list, aiming to popularize concepts such as “reading thousands of books and traveling thousands of miles.”
The list of winners was announced at the event. Wei Xiaoting, a graduate student from Peking University, won the first prize in the main track with her entry “The Confrontation between ‘Destruction’ and ‘Construction’: The Fateful Trio of Chinese Typewriters,” and received a grand prize of 10,000 yuan.
In addition to Wei Xiaoting’s win, Xiaoxin and Li Xiaocong won the first prize in the audio track and video track respectively. Yang Xinyou, Yang Biru, and five other children won the first prize in the Chunmiao track. 14 teachers received the Outstanding Instructor Award, and 12 units received the Outstanding Organization Award.
Following the award ceremony, a cultural salon entitled “How do we read in the era of short videos” was held. Writer and film critic Han Haoyue, and “Dan Du” editor-in-chief Wu Qi, engaged in in-depth discussions on the changes in reading methods in the era of video new media.
Han Haoyue emphasized that short videos and deep reading are not mutually exclusive. Short videos have become an integral part of reading and are an objective trend. While the road to deep reading can be challenging, it provides the most feedback and nutrition, making one stronger and more powerful.

Wu Qi believes that each generation has its own answer to the question of reading and dissemination. The new generation will slowly weave short videos, long videos, short readings, and deep readings back into their lives.
Wu Qi noted that although short video reading can be enjoyable for a short period, as we grow older and gain more experience, we will realize that when entertainment habits cannot solve life problems, we need to get valuable insights from books and deep reading that we can use in our future lives.
