FBI and Federal Agencies Announce Iranian Interference in 2024 US Presidential Election
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other federal agencies in the United States announced that Iranian hackers had sent illegally obtained information from former President Donald Trump’s election team to staff members of President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign team.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency confirmed that the intelligence was obtained by Iranian actors through a cyber breach. They also reported that hackers continue to send the information to multiple US media organizations.
A joint statement revealed that “the text of the email contained excerpts of confidential material stolen from Trump’s election team.” However, details about the specific content of the email and its impact are not yet clear.
The FBI has stated that Iran, along with Russia and China, is seeking to sow social divisions and destabilize the American political environment, particularly by disrupting the electoral process and undermining confidence in America’s democratic institutions.
On August 10, the Trump election team announced that Iranian hackers had stolen internal documents and leaked them to major American media outlets. These documents included research materials from Senator J.D. Vance, who is considered the Republican vice presidential candidate.
Meanwhile, Vice President Harris’ campaign team said they had no evidence that the information had been sent directly to them, but that they were working closely with law enforcement to address the situation.
The FBI emphasized that it takes these foreign interference attempts very seriously and is responding aggressively to them as threats to American elections.
