Biden Defends Israel Amid ICC Arrest Warrant for Netanyahu
Biden Responds to ICC Arrest Warrant for Netanyahu
President Joe Biden of the United States has officially reacted to the International Criminal Court‘s (ICC) arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The ICC also issued warrants for Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif.
Biden condemned the ICC’s arrest warrant for Israeli leaders as outrageous. He stated that there is no equality between Israel and Hamas. Biden made these comments following the ICC’s allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity against Netanyahu due to Israel’s actions in Gaza.
The White House expressed deep concern over the ICC’s decision. The United States does not have legal ties to the ICC, as it is not a member. A National Security Council spokesperson reiterated that the ICC lacks jurisdiction in this matter.
Donald Trump, the president-elect following the November 5, 2024 election, defended Israel through his National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. Waltz criticized the ICC’s credibility and asserted that the U.S. government has dismissed the allegations as unfounded. His comments also referenced a United Nations investigation that claimed Israel exhibited genocidal behavior in Gaza, a report that the U.S. rejected.
Trump’s response reflects rising anger among Republicans, many of whom are calling for sanctions against the ICC, which is composed of 124 nations and is expected to execute warrants.
U.S. politics is closely tied to Jewish lobbying groups, particularly the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). AIPAC reportedly spends over $100 million on U.S. presidential candidates during election seasons. As of July, political action committees related to AIPAC had disbursed $44.8 million, mainly to congressional campaigns and political groups. Additionally, $55.4 million was spent through a super PAC focused on voter influence through advertisements.
