Biden Deportations Hit Record High in 2024, Surpassing Trump Era
Biden Governance Oversees Highest Deportation Numbers in a Decade
Washington, D.C. – The Biden administration deported a record-breaking 271,484 immigrants during fiscal year 2024, marking the highest number in a decade and surpassing deportation figures from any year of the Trump administration.
This surge in deportations, nearly double the 142,580 deportations in the previous fiscal year, has sparked debate about the Biden administration’s immigration policies.
The figures, released in the annual report by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and cited by the Washington Post, reveal a critically important increase compared to the Trump era. While Trump’s administration saw a peak of 267,258 deportations in 2019, the Biden administration’s numbers have now surpassed that figure.
“ICE is an apolitical agency,” stated Patrick J. Lechleitner, the agency’s top official, emphasizing that ICE agents are tasked with enforcing laws established by Congress. However, Lechleitner also highlighted “a chronic lack of funding,” which could potentially hinder future deportation efforts.
The Biden administration’s deportation numbers contrast with its earlier years. In fiscal year 2021, ICE deported 59,011 individuals, followed by 72,177 in fiscal year 2022.
The increase in deportations comes as the Department of homeland Security (DHS) reported returning over 700,000 individuals, including removals, to their countries of origin during fiscal year 2024. This figure represents the highest number since 2010 and encompasses operations conducted by both ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The surge in deportations under the Biden administration has raised questions about the administration’s commitment to its stated goals of creating a more humane immigration system.
Biden Administration Deportations Reach Decade High, Sparking Debate
NewsDirect3 editorial: Today we speak with Dr. Maria Rodriguez, an immigration law expert and Professor at Columbia Law School, about the recent surge in deportations under the Biden administration.
NewsDirect3: Dr. Rodriguez, the Biden administration has overseen a sharp increase in deportations, exceeding even the numbers under the Trump administration. What are your thoughts on this?
Dr. Rodriguez: This increase is certainly striking, especially given President Biden’s campaign promises of a more humane immigration system. While ICE maintains they are merely enforcing existing laws, the sheer volume of deportations raises serious questions about the administration’s priorities and how they are being implemented.
NewsDirect3: Some argue that the rise in deportations is a result of the ongoing border crisis and a need to control migration flow. Do you agree?
Dr. Rodriguez: It’s a complex issue. Certainly, the situation at the border is challenging, but using mass deportations as a primary tool ignores the root causes of migration and fails to address the humanitarian needs of individuals and families seeking refuge.
NewsDirect3: ICE officials cite a lack of funding as a potential hurdle for future deportation efforts. Do you think this is a genuine concern or a tactic to avoid scrutiny?
Dr. Rodriguez: While ICE’s budget has been subject to political battles, using funding as an excuse for mass deportations is concerning. It deflects attention from the need for extensive immigration reform and enduring solutions that address the root causes of migration, not just its symptoms.
NewsDirect3: What do you see as the key takeaways from this situation and potential solutions moving forward?
Dr. Rodriguez: This surge in deportations underscores the urgent need for a more compassionate and just immigration system. We need solutions that prioritize individual rights, address the root causes of migration, and create pathways to legal status for those who contribute to our society. Simply increasing deportations without addressing these broader issues is unsustainable and ultimately harmful to both individuals and the nation as a whole.
