US President Joe Biden to Attend Successor’s Inauguration
In a break from recent tradition, US President Joe Biden has announced his intention to attend the inauguration of his successor in January, regardless of the outcome of the election.
According to the White House, Biden’s decision to attend the inauguration is a demonstration of his commitment to the democratic process and a desire to ensure a peaceful transfer of power. “To take part in the inauguration, to be part of a historic process that happens on a regular basis – he will certainly take part in that,” Biden spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said at a press conference.
The upcoming presidential election is set to be a closely contested race between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. Biden, who withdrew from the presidential race due to growing criticism of his age, has offered his support to his deputy, Kamala Harris.
In contrast to Biden’s decision, his predecessor, Donald Trump, did not attend the inauguration of his Democratic successor in January 2021. Trump’s decision was seen as a break from tradition and was widely criticized at the time.
Tradition of Outgoing Presidents Attending Inaugurations
In the United States, it is considered a matter of course for an outgoing president to attend the inauguration of their successor. This tradition is seen as an important part of the democratic process and helps to ensure a peaceful transfer of power.
