Celtics Celebrate Championship at the White House
On Thursday, President Joe Biden welcomed the Boston Celtics to the White House to celebrate their 2024 NBA championship. This event marked the team’s 18th title, further cementing their legacy as a premier franchise in NBA history.
Biden, whose secret service code name is “Celtic,” expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments. He quoted Celtics legend Red Auerbach, stating, “The Celtics aren’t just a basketball team. They’re a way of life.” He received a No. 46 jersey from All-Star Jayson Tatum and guard Derrick White.
The celebration included a tour of the Oval Office, where the Celtics were honored for their achievements. Biden highlighted his connection to Coach Joe Mazzulla, noting that both he and Mazzulla share a connection through age; Mazzulla is the youngest head coach to win a title since Bill Russell.
The event featured festive elements, including a band playing “Shipping up to Boston” and green lights illuminating the White House. Attendees included Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and local congressional representatives.
Derrick White shared his excitement, noting that being in the White House felt surreal. Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca mentioned that Biden’s grandson, Beau Jr., even tried on a championship ring during the festivities.
In addition to celebrating their championship, the Celtics met with White House officials to discuss important social issues, including juvenile justice reforms and healthcare for new mothers.
Overall, the day was a memorable celebration for the Celtics and a recognition of their hard work and dedication on the court.
