“When I first encountered the Montbéliarde, I was immediately impressed,” Romero said. ”Their performance was exceptional, and I knew they were the right fit for our farm.”
Romero’s dedication to the breed led him to become a member of the Montbéliarde Breeders association and even travel to France to learn from experienced breeders. Today, Rancho Los Álamos is a leading advocate for the breed in Colombia.

“We’ve transformed our milking parlor into a cozy and inviting space for our cows,” Romero explained. “They actually enjoy coming in to be milked.”
The farm implements a range of practices designed to prioritize animal comfort and health. These include using specialized needles for procedures to minimize pain,providing comfortable resting areas,and implementing a preventative health program that includes personalized nutritional strategies.
This focus on animal welfare translates into remarkable results. The Montbéliarde cows at Rancho Los Álamos produce an average of 35 to 40 liters of milk per day, with exceptionally low somatic cell counts, indicating excellent udder health.
Rancho Los Álamos also prioritizes sustainability in its operations. Feed costs represent a meaningful portion of any dairy farm’s expenses, so the farm utilizes innovative feed solutions.
“We use silage made from ryegrass and kikuyo,which can be stored for up to two years,” romero said. “This helps us reduce waste and ensure a consistent feed supply.”
The farm also partners with Pecker Nutrition to develop customized rations that maximize animal efficiency and minimize environmental impact.

The farm processes its own milk and produces a variety of cheeses, which are sold in local stores in Ubaté and through online platforms in Bogotá.
