Professional wrestler Big Damo has identified Major League Wrestling’s (MLW) patience during his recovery from a minor injury as the primary reason he joined the promotion earlier this year. In an interview with OutKick Dropkick, the 6-foot-3, 310-pound Belfast native stated that the organization’s willingness to wait for his return after he missed a scheduled January start date fostered a sense of loyalty that he described as rare in the wrestling industry.

Building a Global Roster

Beyond the personal support he received, Damo cited the company’s strategic partnerships as a major draw for his decision to sign. MLW has established working relationships with international organizations including Mexico’s Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) and New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Damo noted that these alliances, coupled with the arrival of talent from the Japanese promotion Stardom, have created an intriguing environment for performers.

He also highlighted the company’s distribution strategy, which makes the weekly program “Fusion” accessible on platforms such as Tubi and Veeps. Damo remarked that MLW is currently making a concerted effort to recruit European talent, an initiative he aligns himself with as a prominent representative from the region.

Joining the Contra Unit Faction

Since debuting, Damo has aligned himself with Contra Unit, a faction characterized by its aggressive style. The group’s current lineup includes Brick Savage, Kushida, Ikuro Kwon, Okumira, Josef Samael, and the Sentai Death Squad. Damo described the collective as a formidable group capable of intimidating opponents, noting that he and Brick Savage are particularly focused on establishing a dominant presence.

Well, at this point with myself and Brick Savage, I think we could probably run through a brick wall. So, it probably is the best time to say we’re probably the most feared we’ve been in a long time.

Damo added that the current iteration of the faction is among the most effective he has been a part of during his career, and he believes they are currently putting the rest of the roster on notice.

Competing for the Opera Cup

While his teammate Brick Savage is actively pursuing championship titles, Damo is currently prioritizing the Opera Cup. The tournament, which MLW revived in 2019, traces its origins to the late 1800s and was previously discontinued in 1948 following a win by Stu Hart. Damo expressed a desire to secure the historic trophy, noting the potential for significant personal achievement.

His path through the single-elimination bracket begins with a match against Wolf Gang, scheduled to air on Tubi. Damo indicated that he is prepared for subsequent rounds, which could include high-profile matchups against Matt Riddle or Killer Kross. He emphasized his goal of becoming the first Irish winner of the tournament while remaining open to future title opportunities.

I’m looking at the likes of Matt Riddle. I’m looking at the likes of Killer Kross. These are people who I know very well and wouldn’t mind a little bit of gold around my waist as well. So, listen, I’m leaving everything on the table, but I’ll start with the Opera Cup because the Opera Cup, obviously, is probably the most historic tournament still going in pro wrestling.
