Big Freedia Announces Gospel Album ‘Pressing Onward’
New orleans bounce artist Big Freedia is venturing into gospel music with her upcoming album, “Pressing Onward.” The album, scheduled for release Aug. 8, will feature collaborations with Billy Porter and Tamar Braxton.
Freedia shared on Instagram that the album initially aimed to bring healing to the world but has now become a source of strength for her personally. She said she poured her heart into every aspect of the music and is relying on support from loved ones to move forward.
The album’s title, ”Pressing Onward,” serves as a tribute to Freedia’s late partner, Devon, who recently passed away. Freedia said that Devon’s sudden death changed everything, and the album’s message of healing is now something she holds onto for strength.
“Pressing Onward” includes 14 tracks, such as “All I Need,” ”Pew,” “Let It Rain,” and ”Praise Dance.” Billy Porter is featured on “holy Shuffle,” while Tamar Braxton appears on “Sunday Best.”
In a press release, Big Freedia said she has waited her entire career to create this album. She added that she hopes fans can find faith and hope in the album during these uncertain times, drawing inspiration from the drama, choir, and attire of the church.
Freedia released “Take My Hand” in March as the album’s lead single. She previously described this musical era as a return to her roots, referencing her experience as a choir director in high school and her involvement with the New Orleans Gospel Music Workshop of America.
