Big Money, Star Talent, and Glam Rooms: Will Unrivaled Transform Women’s Basketball?
Inside a repurposed television studio just miles from Miami’s bustling international airport, a groundbreaking women’s professional basketball league is set to make its debut this Friday. Called Unrivaled, the league brings together 36 of the WNBA’s top players for a two-month season that promises to redefine the sport.
The league features six teams competing in a fast-paced, three-on-three format on a two-thirds sized court, culminating in playoffs and a championship game on March 17. A three-day, one-on-one “Queen of the Court” tournament will also take place next month, adding another layer of excitement to the season.
What sets Unrivaled apart is not just its innovative gameplay but its commitment to creating a holistic experience for players. Unlike traditional offseasons, where athletes often scatter across the globe to play in Europe, Asia, or Australia, Unrivaled keeps everyone in one place. The league has secured exclusive accommodations in Miami, allowing players to bring their families and eliminating the isolation many face while playing abroad.
The league’s founders, WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, along with a team of executives, have attracted significant investment to make this vision a reality. Renowned athletes like Michael Phelps, Coco Gauff, Carmelo Anthony, and Alex Morgan, alongside major corporations, have collectively contributed $35 million to fund the league’s inaugural season. Corporate sponsors, including Samsung, Wayfair, Wilson, Under Armour, TNT Sports, Miller Lite, and Sephora, have also thrown their support behind the venture.
The once nondescript studio has been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility, complete with a fully equipped gym, spa, luxurious club rooms, and even a nursery for player mothers. Three media studios are available for players to enhance their personal brands and engage with fans.
Perhaps most revolutionary is the league’s ownership model. Players receive equity in the league’s revenue in addition to their salaries, which average $240,000—significantly higher than the typical WNBA contract.
“It’s everything,” said Brittney Griner, who will play for the Phantom Basketball Club alongside New York Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu. “They’re bringing something new to women’s basketball. They’re making it exciting. They’re trying to give us a different look and a different feel on how we can bring everybody together.”
Leading the league is Micky Lawler, former president of the Women’s Tennis Association, who joined Unrivaled because of its commitment to improving compensation and exposure for female athletes. “It’s transferring ownership to those who create the value,” Lawler said.
Alex Bazzell, the league’s president and a renowned basketball skills coach, along with Luke Cooper, president of basketball operations, have worked tirelessly to bring the vision to life. Cooper credits Stewart and Collier as the driving force behind the venture. “Our north star every day has been, ‘How can we make it better for the players?’” he said.
The league’s debut has already generated significant buzz. Tickets for the 850-seat arena, where no seat is more than 32 feet from the court, are sold out for nearly every game. Two games will be held each night on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays, with a championship double-header set for March 16 and 17.
While Unrivaled was designed to complement the WNBA rather than compete with it, its existence could have lasting implications for the broader landscape of women’s basketball. “A high tide floats all boats,” Collier said.
Griner echoed this sentiment, noting that the league’s success could inspire growth across the sport. “Unrivaled is showing that you don’t need a lot of time to pull resources together to put a good product out there,” she said. “Hopefully, it helps the W push forward, bringing in more viewership and more partners.”
With its innovative approach, star-studded roster, and commitment to empowering players, Unrivaled is poised to make history as it tips off this weekend.
