Detroit’s own Big Sean is bridging the gap between hip-hop and classical music with “A night at The Orchestra,” a concert event featuring the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) and several local hip-hop artists. the event, scheduled for June 29 at Orchestra Hall in Midtown Detroit, will pay tribute to the late J Dilla, a legendary figure in Detroit hip-hop.
Illa J, J dilla’s brother, will perform, along with nasaan, son of the late Proof, plus Queen Naija, Skilla Baby, and Tee Grizzley. The DSO will also perform an instrumental piece honoring Dilla’s innovative sound. This unique collaboration aims to make the orchestra experience more accessible while providing a platform for Detroit’s hip-hop talent.
The concert will support several charitable causes.Proceeds from “A Night At The Orchestra” will benefit the Detroit Pistons Foundation, the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan, and Big Sean’s Sean Anderson Foundation. This initiative underscores Big Sean’s commitment to giving back to his community through music and philanthropy.
Big Sean is among several hip-hop artists who have recently collaborated with symphony orchestras. Metro Boomin, Nas, and RZA have all performed with orchestras, blending hip-hop with classical arrangements. Jeezy is also scheduled to perform with the symphony at the Fox Theater in September, according to the Detroit Free Press.
