Bihar Politics: Will Nitish Kumar’s Shifts Hurt Him Against Tejashwi Yadav?
Updated June 10, 2025
Bihar’s political landscape is witnessing a crucial juncture as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar navigates the consequences of frequent alliance changes. D M Diwakar, formerly of the A N Sinha Institute of Social Studies, suggests Kumar’s credibility among voters has diminished due to these shifts, impacting his ability to consolidate secular votes.
kumar’s Janata Dal (united) currently governs in alliance with the BJP-led NDA.On the other side, Tejashwi Yadav leads the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), seeking to capitalize on any perceived instability.
Diwakar noted that minority voters are less likely to support Kumar, particularly after his support for the Waqf (Amendment) Act. Voters are wary of Kumar perhaps returning to the BJP,he said.
The possible entry of Nishant Kumar, Nitish Kumar’s son, into Bihar politics is another factor. Diwakar believes Nitish Kumar is prioritizing his son’s future. A deputy CM position for Nishant, with BJP approval, coudl keep Nitish in the alliance even if he steps down as chief minister.
However, Nishant’s entry is considered late compared to other leaders like Tejashwi Yadav and Chirag Paswan. Diwakar questions whether Nishant can command the same respect as his father and maintain the support of key voter blocs.
“When he (Nitish Kumar) shifted between RJD and BJP several times, his credibility decreased among the voters… and his importance for the BJP has also decreased.”
Meanwhile,Tejashwi Yadav is gaining traction. Diwakar highlights that top BJP leaders are directly targeting the RJD, acknowledging its growing popularity. Yadav’s support base is expanding, and his secular credentials, along with backing from the Left, strengthen his position.
The impact of Prashant Kishor and his Jan Suraaj initiative is also under scrutiny.Diwakar views Kishor more as a marketing manager than a political leader. Kishor’s stance against the liquor ban has alienated women voters, a crucial demographic in Bihar.
Diwakar questions Kishor’s ideological stability, noting his party’s lack of notable emergence in previous elections. He does not anticipate Kishor being a major factor in upcoming polls.
What’s next
as Bihar approaches the next election, the central question remains: Can Nitish Kumar’s experience outweigh the potential erosion of voter trust, or will Tejashwi Yadav successfully rally public sentiment to his favor?
