Billie Piper is making a comeback to Doctor Who, stepping into the role of the iconic Time Lord. The actress will be the second woman to portray the Doctor,following Jodie Whittaker. The announcement follows Ncuti Gatwa’s departure during the latest series finale.
Piper’s return to Doctor Who marks her third appearance in the series. She originally played Rose Tyler from 2005 to 2006 and had a cameo in 2010. Weeks before the official announcement, Piper hinted at her return during an interview on BBC Three’s Doctor Who: Unleashed, celebrating the show’s 20th anniversary.
When asked about a possible return, Piper said, “yeah I would… I would come back. What’s funny is that I never feel like I’ve left Doctor Who, as there is this huge Doctor Who afterlife.” She added that returning is “really good fun,” quickly correcting herself to say she still feels like she’s in it, just “a lot older.”
It’s no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse, as I have some of my best memories there. So to be given the opportunity to step back on that Tardis one more time was just something I couldn’t refuse.

There are rumors that david Tennant, who played the 10th Doctor, might also return for a 20th-anniversary special. Tennant portrayed the Doctor from 2005 to 2010 and briefly reappeared as the 14th Doctor before Gatwa took over.
Ncuti Gatwa, reflecting on his departure after just one season, shared, “This journey has been one that I will never forget and a role that will be part of me forever… I’ll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor.” He cited the physical and emotional demands of the role as reasons for his exit.
