Understanding Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a neurological condition characterized by the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain’s ventricles. This accumulation can lead to a range of symptoms, primarily affecting balance and gait, cognitive function, and bladder control. According to the Hydrocephalus Support Association, NPH typically impacts individuals over the age of 60.
In a candid statement posted to his Instagram account in may, Joel explained that his condition had been ”exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance.” He further elaborated that he was undergoing physical therapy and had made the difficult decision to cancel his remaining shows on the advice of his medical team.
speaking with host Bill Maher, Joel confirmed that his health issue is “not fixed. It’s still being worked on.”
Joel’s Personal Reflections on NPH
When asked about the cause of his NPH, Joel admitted he doesn’t know what triggered its development. He humorously speculated,”I thought it must be from drinking,” adding that he no longer consumes alcohol,a stark contrast to his past habits, which he described as “like a fish.”
As of now, Billy Joel has not announced any rescheduled concert dates.
