Billy Joel Cancels Tour Due to Brain Disorder Diagnosis
Updated May 26,2025
Billy Joel has canceled his concert schedule through the summer of 2026 after revealing he has been diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH),a brain disorder. The condition has been worsened by recent performances, leading to issues with hearing, vision, and balance, according to a statement.
Joel, 76, is undergoing physical therapy and has been advised by his doctor to avoid performing during his recovery. He expressed gratitude for the care he is receiving and looks forward to returning to the stage.
The announcement follows concerns raised after Joel fell onstage during a Feb. 22 show in Uncasville, Conn. That incident led to the postponement of eight shows and a surgery for an unspecified condition. He had been scheduled to resume performing July 5 in Pittsburgh with Rod Stewart.
I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus involves excess cerebrospinal fluid buildup in the brain, potentially causing problems with movement, bladder control, and cognitive functions. The Yale School of Medicine notes that early diagnosis allows for possible reversal of the condition through ventricular shunting. Tho, if diagnosed later, after dementia has begun, the symptoms may not be reversible.
Last summer, Joel concluded a 10-year residency at Madison Square Garden in New York, breaking venue records for lifetime performances. His 100th appearance at MSG in July 2018 featured a surprise appearance by Bruce Springsteen. Throughout the residency, he was joined onstage by artists including John Fogerty, Brian Johnson of AC/DC, Paul Simon, Miley Cyrus, John Mellencamp, and Olivia Rodrigo.
What’s next
Ticketholders for the canceled shows will receive automatic refunds as Joel focuses on his health and recovery from Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. Further updates on his condition and future performances will be provided as available.
