Billy Joel Reassures Fans amidst Health Concerns, Documentary Premieres
New York, NY - Music icon Billy Joel has offered a reassuring update to his devoted fanbase regarding his health, following a recent diagnosis that led to the cancellation of several scheduled concerts. The 76-year-old “Piano Man” shared that while he is managing a condition known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), he is feeling “good” and is not as concerned as the medical terminology might suggest.
Understanding Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)
Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a neurological condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the brain’s ventricles.According to the Alzheimer’s Association, NPH can lead to a triad of symptoms: cognitive decline, difficulties with walking and balance, and urinary incontinence.
Joel himself elaborated on his experience during an appearance on Bill Maher’s podcast, “Club Random.” He described experiencing symptoms that worsened during recent performances, including issues with his hearing, vision, and balance. Despite these challenges, Joel conveyed a sense of optimism, stating, “I feel good. They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder so it sounds a lot worse than what I’m feeling.” He also touched upon the idiopathic nature of NPH, meaning its cause is often unknown, humorously speculating, “I thought it must be from drinking,” before adding that he no longer consumes alcohol.
A Farewell to Madison square Garden and a Look Ahead
The health update comes shortly after Joel concluded his historic decade-long residency at Madison Square garden in July 2024, marking the completion of 104 monthly shows. His previously announced tour, which included U.S. dates and collaborations with fellow music legends Stevie Nicks,Rod Stewart, and Sting, has been canceled to allow him to focus on his health.
